The items no decorative clay plaster job can do without: primers for preparing the surface, protective varnish, masking tapes, sheeting and a priming roller. Small things — but they decide whether the plaster bonds well and whether the work goes smoothly.
The benefit of good preparation is simple: no full skim-coating is needed, and the job goes much faster than painting walls with ordinary paint.
